President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday said that North Korea has sent troops and weapons to support Russia in its fight against neighboring Ukraine.
“We are seeing a growing alliance between Russia and states like North Korea,” the Ukrainian leader said in his evening video speech. “This is no longer just about transferring weapons. It’s actually about transferring people from North Korea to the military.”
There has never been independent confirmation that North Korean troops are fighting Russian troops against Ukraine.
In recent days, there have been reports of North Korean military deployments in eastern Ukraine. However, when it comes to soldiers killed in action, it has never been conclusively shown that all the dead were members of the Russian regular army – or not.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), an American military think tank, recently reported that several thousand North Korean soldiers have arrived in Russia and are being prepared to be sent to Ukraine.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been supporting Russia’s war with Ukraine, which began in February 2022, with weapons and ammunition. According to South Korea’s intelligence agency, Pyongyang is supplying Russia with short-range artillery shells and missiles.
Zelensky intends to discuss this development with his Western partners in the near future.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and since then has been waging a devastating war on the neighboring country.
