The 100-year-old gun, weighing 300 kilograms (660 pounds), was safely removed from a construction site near the Serbian Parliament in Belgrade, police said.
The 305mm “Morser M.11” howitzer shell, found last Wednesday, was used by the Austro-Hungarian army during the siege of the capital in July 1914 during World War I, Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic before the removal operation.
Police ordered nearby residents to move their cars from the area and urged them to be careful, advising them to get out of their homes if possible.
The shell was sent to a sandy beach about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Belgrade, where it was destroyed.
Several bombs left over from previous wars were found in Serbia, but they were removed without causing any explosions.
In Nis, southern Serbia, a large bomb was found in the 1999 NATO bombing in April, and in 2021, a 242-kilogram bomb from WWII was removed from a construction site in the Belgrade area.
