Bacojo, Garcia shared second place with 7 others at the Singapore Open chessfest

FILIPINO Mark Jay Bacojo defeated Spain’s Eduardo Iturrizaga for the second time in a row and jumped into the second round of compatriot Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the seventh round of the Singapore International Open on Tuesday.

Mr. 18-year-old Bacojo broke the English Opening of Mr. Iturrizaga in 42 games in a game where the first one punished the game by avoiding a draw by repeating relying on the queenside that passed the full point.

When it ended, the prominence of the Far Eastern University appeared with full unity and victory in sight.

In the previous round, Mr. Bacojo took down Mongolian GM Sumiya Bilguun and will have a chance to claim another GM scalp as he faces Turkish Vahap Sanal in the eighth round and penalties on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bacojo was half a point behind single leader GM SP Sethuraman of India with six points while sharing No. 2 with nine others including Mr. Garcia, who beat international champion Svyatoslav Bazakutsa of Ukraine.

Mr. Garcia, who is looking for his first GM routine, also caught a big fish after he killed the super GM Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine in the fifth round and caught Mr. Iturrizaga to the next one.
