Ryan Garcia’s showdown with Rukiya Anpo on December 30 is in doubt after his promoters, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy, claimed they have exclusive rights to his fights.
Ryan has remained silent since Golden Boy’s statement, only posting once to X, using an emoji, to show his frustration. It is unclear whether the event can go ahead if Ryan and the company can get the necessary approval. Fanmio will need to make an agreement with Golden Boy for the event to take place if it will involve Ryan Garcia, Whether that will happen soon is unknown.
If Ryan gets hurt or beaten by the much larger 6’0″ Anpo during the show, it could have a negative impact on his future PPV fights. That’s not a good thing for Golden Boy.
That would be a big deal for Golden Boy, as Ryan gets humiliated by Anpo and beaten by him, which is entirely possible given his size and strength. Anpo did a number on 45-year-old Manny Pacquiao last July on the show.
Since this is a PPV event on December 30, the organizers should negotiate with Golden Boy and De La Hoya to allow them to continue promoting it. This is the type of event that will require a lot of creative marketing to get fans excited enough to want to buy it on PPV.
Yesterday’s Garcia-Anpo press conference got off to a great start to attract interest in a theatrical way, with Anpo throwing a paper at Ryan, then shoving him. It’s just a shame that all of that could go to waste if a deal isn’t reached between Fanmio and Golden Boy.
There is speculation about whether Ryan and the company that organizes the event, Fanmio, can get the permission Golden Boy needs to go ahead with the eight-round show. Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) often posts, but doesn’t say anything.
