Zepeda Vs. Farmer Rematch Possible Before Stevenson Fight
Oscar De La Hoya says William Zepeda could face Tevin Farmer in a rematch before facing WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson if he defeats Floyd Schofield on February 22.
Shakur will not be happy when he hears that Zepeda is fighting for a rematch with Farmer. He was hoping to defend the famous Mexican star next. New Jersey native Stevenson needs that fight against Zepeda to build momentum for a unification bout with WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.
Zepeda-Farmer II?
#1 ranked 135-lb contender Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs) defeated Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) via a 10-round split decision on November 16th in Riyadh. It is a waste of time to have a duplicate. Zepeda was clearly the better fighter and would have taken out a very tired looking Farmer had it been a 12 round contest.
Farmer’s engine was empty in the ninth round from the pace and a bunch of body shots from Zepeda. The Mexican talent was throwing close to 100 punches per round and focused heavily on the body.
It was impressive to see Farmer take all those shots, but at the end of the fight, he looked like he had left the battlefield.
The former IBF super featherweight champion, Farmer, has participated in the fight, beating Zepeda in the fourth round. Zepeda came out strong and defeated Farmer, 34, in the second round of the fight, firing a number of rounds that exhausted him.
Interestingly, the judges seemed to ignore all of Zepeda’s shots at Farmer during the fight, which should have gone one way for Williams. The scores were 95-94 for Williams, 95-94 for Zepeda, and 95-94 for Farmer.
“We have to wait because this is a real war. Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield is a real fight, a dangerous fight for Shakur,” said Oscar De Hoya on Fight Hub TV when asked if William Zepeda will fight Shakur Stevenson next after defending against Floyd Schofield on February 22.
“I have to go with my boy. I think my boy, Kid Austin, is going to take the piss out of it, and then we’ll do it there. William Zepeda, will get him a fight for now.
“There may be talks about a rematch with Tevin Farmer. It was a very good fight,” De La Hoya said of Zepeda’s 10-round split decision victory over Farmer on November 16 in Riyadh. “I think Tevin Farmer is a terrific fighter. I love the way he handles himself outside the ring. He’s a good kid.
Farmer has taken a lot of punishment in his last two fights against Zepeda and Raymond Muratalla. We probably won’t see the same effort from him in a rematch with Zepeda. He got hit hard, and Zepeda is going to pour on them right away to get him out of there.
“So, yes, it’s a matter of sitting down with Zepeda’s team and making a plan for him. But I like the rematch,” said De La Hoya about the second fight between Zepeda and Farmer.
