Yellowstone Director Goes to ‘Great Lengths’ to Protect Final Scripts
Yellowstone director Christina Voros revealed the secret surrounding the final season’s climax – and he was “the gatekeeper.”
“Part of the cast doesn’t know what’s going on,” Voros said The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, November 5, explaining that he and the creator Taylor Sheridan decided to keep the last six documents under lock and key.
Voros, who directed four of the six episodes of the farewell season 2, said, “It was all about protecting what Taylor and the cast and this creative family had built over the years, and knowing how much anticipation there was. in these documents.”
He continued, “The powers that be were about protecting the audience rather than privacy, and we’re doing a lot more.”

Instead of using a traditional script coordinator, Voros said he “took over the reins” and did “a reshuffle of all the cast members” to keep the plot a secret.
“Many actors got the scenes they were only in,” he said. “So a large part of the cast, even some of our seven-year veterans, will be learning what happens when the show starts.”
Voros noted that when they started shooting at the end of the season, he was the only one with his first AD, Kether Abeleshad access to documents. The producers and actors were kept in the dark until they arrived to film.

“The Duttons’ actors are in a secret club,” said Voros, referring to their leads. “But for the most part, people knew the scenes they were in.”
Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, headed by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children, Beth (Kelly Reilly), Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Kayce (Luke Grimes).
When Costner, 69, announced in June that he was not returning to 5B, Voros said it raised the group’s preference for privacy to end a potential series. (The first half of season 5 ended in January 2023.)
“It was a really good storm. Expectations are high. “There’s a lot in the press about Kevin,” said Voros. “And when you’re doing a show with adoring fans, everyone’s going to have their own ideas about how it should end.”
The director called the final chapter “beautiful and surprising and unexpected and funny,” in part because it’s the season finale. (Voros noted that he doesn’t know if there will be a season 6 after rumors surfaced that Reilly no Cole Hauser could lead to multiple episodes.)
“You’re working with actors who know their characters like Taylor, and they don’t have a lifetime’s work in creating these roles,” Voros said. “This year’s games are unique.”
The characters’ ability to thrive without seeing eye-to-eye is due to Voros’ determination to keep everything separate. That included treating every scene as a “closed set.”
“We had code names for things. There were scenes where we had a bunch of extras where we shot a different kind of scene,” recalls Voros. “We’re lucky to have so many great artists come on the show and make the world real for us – but you don’t want 150 people in the arena to go home and tell their families what they did that day. “
To avoid leaks, he said, “There are places where people learn to vary what their dialogue was to protect and divert from what people might think is happening.”
Voros compared the regulations to “Covid protocols” where if someone can’t access, they can’t spill the information.
“It was not because of fear that there is someone in the family who does not protect the matter. In addition, if you know something, you can say it by mistake, “explains the filmmaker. “We were protecting the cast and crew from having that information, so we didn’t have to worry about whether they were keeping other things secret.”

When it comes to what fans will see when season 5 returns on Sunday, November 10, Voros would say that John will be taken to the “train station,” meaning that he was killed and buried by the Duttons. However, he teased that John “will be involved” in the final episodes.
“I think saying more than that would jeopardize all the work that has been done to reorganize the documents!” Voros laughed. But I think that’s why people ask themselves, ‘Right? Where is he, isn’t he?’ it is because he is the patriarch and his presence is an important element in the story. John Dutton is in the middle.”
He added, “The beating heart of this season is the family. Taylor’s writing always touches on those topics. … I think in many ways, this season is full circle. It goes back to the family that it all started with. “
