Will Shakur Stevenson’s Advice Curb Abdullah Mason’s Star Power?
WBC lightweight champion, Shakur Stevenson, met with 135-lb prospect Abdullah Mason in the locker room last Friday night, November 8, to give him some pearls of wisdom after he survived his fight with Yohan Vasquez at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, in Virginia. .
Following Shakur’s advice would diminish Abdullah Mason’s power, making him one of the most unlikely security fighters. Shakur’s style, which is throwback Mayweather’s boring old styleit does not fit into the modern era of boxing.
That’s why fans keep booing Shakur out of nowhere; he is not theirs. If there was a time machine, Shakur would have to be sent back to 1995, when fans put up with his fighting style because, in this age of competition in other sports, he doesn’t belong.
Mason, 20, was knocked out twice by Vasquez in the first round but came back to knock him out in the second round.
Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs), who is known for his defense, told Mason that he doesn’t need to fight hard in the first two or three rounds because every fighter is dangerous early on. He wants Mason to use his 5’9″ height by staying on the outside instead of risking himself by fighting up close, which is why he was knocked down twice by Vasquez.
Mason threw uppercuts and was knocked down twice with left hooks by the powerful Vaszuez (26-6, 21 KOs). He took a risk by fighting Vasquez up close for a knockout in the second round.
Shakur Offers Masonic Career Advice
Abdullah Mason: “We’re here, and we’re moving on to the next thing. We want everyone.”
Shakur Stevenson: “I want to tell you something that will take you to the next level,” said Stevenson on Top Rank Boxing in an interview with Abdullah Mason. “Every striker in the first round is dangerous. So, with your skills and all that you have, you can keep the guys out from the start, because you can fight from the outside and the inside.
“You fight in both phases, but in those first three rounds, you still want to know about defense and keep guys out. Then, ‘He’s getting a little old, and now we’re going to step on him and get him out of there.’
“You’re going to get everyone out there with your skills. Just understand early on, everyone is a risk. You don’t want to come out of the exchange and give away your height. Keep the boy aside. Then, set three, four, or five. Okay, he slowed down. I’m about to beat your a**.’ You are hell bro.
“You will be one of the stars, I promise you. Just make sure the IQ is there with the skills. “
Why Mason should NOT listen to Shakur
The problem with Mason changing his style to be able to defend like Shakur is that it will take a lot of excitement out of his style, making him one of the average fighters in the lightweight division rather than the standout that he is now.
To become a star in the modern era of boxing, fighters must fight bravely, risking cuts to get the knockout punch. If Mason changes his fighting style If Mason fights like Shakur, he will be boring to watch and may never become a star. Stevenson is one of the dullest fighters in the sport, and it sounds like he wants to change Abdullah’s style to copy his boring fighting style.
Do NOT be friends with Shakur
It’s a bad idea for Mason to change the way he fights. Furthermore, he shouldn’t be friendly with Shakur because he might end up needing to fight him. The last thing fans need to hear is Mason saying he can’t fight Shakur because he’s friends with him. That’s Keyshawn’s argument for not fighting Shakur.
