David Morrell of Cuba will bring great power and technical skills to his fight with former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez on January 25 in Las Vegas.
Benavidez will face the biggest puncher of his career and a guy with more experience due to his rookie years in his home country of Cuba.
The last fight of the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 showed that it is not a good idea for Morrell to let the fight go to the scorecards against him. That fight looked to be a draw or win for Benavidez, but he was awarded a 12-round decision.
Unless Morrell wants to be treated the same way, he has to knock out Benavidez on January 25th. Luckily for Morrell, he has a lot of striking power and can take the judges out of the picture.
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) has the kind of power Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) hasn’t faced before in his 11-year professional career, and he won’t be able to hold back under those kinds of shots from the Cuban. .
We saw in Benavidez’s debut at 175 against Oleksandr Gvozdyk that his stamina is that of a six-round fighter, and his strength has failed to increase from the 168-lb weight class. Benavidez has never been a big puncher. The reasons for his success are due to these factors:
- Weak opposition
- High punch output
- Advantage of size
Morrell has been calling out Benavidez for the past few years but has been ignored. Benavidez preferred to face older veterans for obvious reasons. It is believed that the only reason why Benavidez finally agreed to fight David Morrell was his poor match against Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic on August 3rd.
While Morrell, 26, held the light heavyweight title challenger Kalajdzic (29-3, 21 KOs), he hurt him numerous times, failed to land a knockout and looked vulnerable.
The scores were 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110 in favor of Morrell. That fight showed that Morrell needs to throw more punches if he is to shock his opponents because Kalajdzic was hurt four times in the contest but he let him go from there by not combining his shots to finish the job.
