Wicked Soundtrack, Countdown
There is something about They are not bad song that comes out at the end of the year and sneaks into our Spotify Wrapped playlists that don’t do the album well. I know in just a few weeks, it will have taken many of the top positions in my rankings at least. Let’s be real, it’s probably going to be a big year in everyone’s Wrapped standards with the release of Villains: Part Two.
With that in mind, we drop the needle The Bad Part One’s musical featuring Ariana Grande as Galinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, whose love interest inspires the hit musical film. If you’re in the same (theatrical) camp as we are who have seen the movie multiple times, there’s a list of songs we listen to when we’re not sitting inside Nicole Kidman’s AMC church. Like it or not there are likes and dislikes, but good for you if you consider it a non-overlapping album. However, here are our rankings from forgettable to favorite ears from They are not bad sound track.
“The Compassionate Man” – Jeff Goldblum
Okay, we have to say it… gossip the singing is not good. Love Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, but slowing down what’s already been played on the soundtrack makes it a lot more drawn out for expositional purposes, just as the action is about to begin.
“Something Bad” – Peter Dinklage and Cynthia Erivo
What balances this is Cynthia Erivo’s singing. However, this number one play is our first bathroom and snack break when we watch it again in the theater. Obviously it’s important to stay in the first round for important exposure purposes. There is nothing wrong with it.
“Dear Old Shiz” – Shiz University Choir, Ariana Grande, and They are not bad Actors
It offers the development of a school of magic; we needed more from them. I can’t wait to walk through the Universal Studios theme park and hear this live. And Grande’s note ate.
“No One Mourns The Bad” – Ariana Grande and They are not bad Actors
We cry for the wicked. Love the word play here with the crowd singing “Ain’t No One Crying Evil” and Ariana Grande singing “No, one cries for the Evil,” and the double meaning played by Glinda’s high notes hits hard as the story unfolds.
“I’m Not That Girl” – Cynthia Erivo
It’s a painful time for unrequited love, it’s been there. Cynthia Erivo’s cool song shows that Elphaba has the masses before belting out “Defying Gravity.”
“One Short Day” – Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and They are not bad Actors
We are still shouting about [redacted] cameos and we are working on memorizing new words.
“Ozdust Duet” – The They are not bad The Orchestra
“Dancing Through Life” is the longest of the movie—it’s basically its own act but it really shines when Elphaba and Glinda have their bonding time. The instrumental of “Ozdust Duet” is beautiful and evokes all the feelings you have when you find someone you understand.
“Dancing for Life” – Jonathan Bailey and They are not bad Actors
That’s right, despite its length, “Dancing Alive” runs the gamut of set pieces, from the library to quiet moments between characters we love to sing along to (Uh, Nessa? Listen to Nessa? Nessa? Nessa?), right into the show’s finale. This is too much fun to burst out loud.
“The Wizard and I” – Cynthia Erivo
The power ballad that is Elphaba’s “I want” will have many karaoke sessions and sing alongs for years to come.
“What Is This Feeling?” – Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and They are not bad Actors
This frenetic song is best known for its TikTok dance skills with Galinda and her band Shiz (notebook, stomp). We know this because it’s constantly rotating through all the other Reel and TikTok samples on our About pages.
“Famous” – Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande as Galinda singing “Famous” is an all-time performer. It’s contagious and awesome, OKAY?! Thanks for the short radio edit without the chat is released. Check it out above!
“Defying gravity” – Cynthia Erivo
Give Cynthia Erivo all the awards! The timelessness of “Defying Gravity” is enhanced by Erivo’s talent as Elphaba. The extended version is our favorite but the radio edit (above) will make you feel like you’re limitless in your pinch.
They are not bad is out now in theaters; screenings of the accompanying songs begin on December 25th at a theater near you, thank you for continuing to refrain from singing until then. The wrong soundtrack can be found online.
