Whoscall’s Web Checker: A powerful tool to verify links to legitimate Christmas gift shops

Among the tips from various forums and experts, one constant piece of advice is to avoid clicking random links from unsolicited SMS messages, messaging apps, or emails.

As the Christmas season begins, the concept of holiday shopping has shifted online, keeping up with the ongoing digital transformation of today’s generation.

Many websites are available for people to buy Christmas gifts. However, this convenience has become an opportunity for online fraudsters to exploit.

They create fake websites designed to steal personal information from unsuspecting victims.

Gogolook Philippines country head Mel Migriño cited a report from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) that describes the scams that Filipinos often encounter.

“The study found that more than 30% of Filipino respondents encountered shopping website scams,” said Ms. Migriño.

“This is followed by investment scams, cash advance scams, and identity theft,” he added.

With this, Ms. Migriño highlighted the Web Checker feature of Whoscall, a global anti-scam application, as a useful tool for the community.

...“Users can use an automatic web checker to verify whether a URL or domain is suspicious or not, and it protects your Internet connection,” explained Ms. Migriño.

AI for victim profiling

In addition, online fraudsters are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to effectively profile victims.

“With AI, scammers can quickly analyze and profile their targets, which helps them decide what kind of social engineering tactics to use,” said Ms. Migriño.

“I urge everyone to always protect your data, respect your right to privacy, and choose carefully the level of information you share online. For fraudsters, our personal information is a big prize,” he added, stressing the importance of protecting privacy.
