It’s been three years since Apple last updated the iPad Mini, but the company is finally turning the page on the sixth generation model of its smallest tablet. The iPad Mini (seventh generation) launches on October 23, with pre-orders now open at Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. Prices start at $499 for the Wi-Fi-only 128GB configuration, which is double the initial storage of the previous generation.
Back in 2021, the sixth-generation iPad Mini was the biggest update to the soft tablet, reflecting Apple’s latest design principles. It received a larger display, USB-C, and support for Apple’s second-generation Pencil, among other important changes. This year’s development feels relatively simple. The highlight is the addition of Apple’s A17 Pro chip, which gives the tablet more processing headroom and the improved Apple Intelligence neural engine, which will come to the iPad Mini as part of iPadOS 18.1 when Apple finally unveils it later this month.
The 2024 update also brings Apple Pencil Pro support (good for the powerful calculator app the iPad finally has), Wi-Fi 6E radios, and faster USB-C performance with 10-gigabit data transfer. The new iPad Mini is identical to the last model, including the same 8.3-inch display and 12MP resolution on its rear and front cameras.
You can pre-order the new iPad Mini from Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. It starts at $499 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and goes up to $799 for the 512GB. The mobile model starts at $649 for the same 128GB and goes up to $949 for the 512GB configuration.
You will be able to pay some of the costs through trade-ins at selected stores. Best Buy, for example, is offering up to $260 off an iPad Mini depending on which tablet and configuration you trade in.
The 2024 iPad Mini will also be available for pre-order directly through major carriers starting October 18th. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile will all accept orders before the release date. IT-Mobile is offering $150 off the mobile model if you activate the $5 per month Go5G Next plan.
As mentioned above, the iPad Mini of the seventh generation will arrive in stores from October 23. You can get it in four colors: space gray, blue, purple, and starlight.
Update, October 16: Added dealer pre-order links and information about pre-ordering from wireless carriers.
