Teddy Atlas Says Joshua Should Retire If He Only Fights For Money

Teddy Atlas says Anthony Joshua should retire if he is to focus on continuing his career just to earn another “150 million” following his loss to Daniel Dubois last Saturday.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, wants him to fight Tyson Fury twice in 2025 and possibly rematch Dubois. Those three fights would earn AJ billions of dollars, adding to his massive fortune. If Joshua loses all three of those fights, he will still make a lot of money.
Atlas believes Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) was “exposed” in his fifth round KO loss against IBF heavyweight champion Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs). He says the mistakes Joshua made in previous fights didn’t work against Dubois, he used those mistakes.
It goes back to Joshua’s trainers. AJ’s tricks during the Dubois fight he had been doing to his teammates during training. Joshua’s trainer, Ben Davison, should have known that he was not going to hit a wrecking machine like Dubois when he was fighting passively or throwing uppercuts.
“He has to decide, ‘Do I retire?’ He must not fight again. Ricky Hatton said he should retire. I agree with Ricky if he will get another 150 million pounds,” said Teddy Atlas on his YouTube channel about Anthony Joshua having to retire if he only fights for money.
Joshua’s fans believe that he should not retire because they feel that his defeat was not a big deal and he can continue to enjoy success if he corrects his tactics. They may be right.
When Joshua fights on the front foot, attacking his opponents with a flurry of punches like he did early in his career, there aren’t many heavyweights who can withstand that kind of punch. However, Joshua hasn’t fought that way in years, which makes him vulnerable.
“If that’s the case, you’ve had enough. Go into the sunset,” Atlas said of Joshua.” People love you. But if something keeps you up at night, you have to fight for it again. Other than that, no.”
There is so much fan interest in Joshua’s feud with Fury that AJ is retiring now. It’s more than money for Joshua; he wants to compete to show that he can still win at the highest levels. Joshua will need a better coach, however, and it doesn’t appear that he is interested in making changes to his team after the loss to Dubois.
“Joshua was exposed. If you ever come back, you should see what you did wrong and what you did in the past. Even if you have escaped but it is not right. It should be fixed. If you fix it, maybe you can come back and do something big again,” said Atlas.
