Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched a laptop assembly line in Chennai

In a major boost to India’s electronics manufacturing sector, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the advanced laptop assembly line of Syrma SGS Technology in Chennai.

Located in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), the facility marks a major step forward in India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, marking the expansion of the nation’s manufacturing capabilities from mobile phones to IT, especially laptops.

The assembly line is scheduled to produce 100,000 laptops per year in its initial phase, with the potential to scale production to 1 million units within the next 1-2 years. Syrma SGS Technology, which operates four manufacturing units in Chennai, has started production of laptops at its Unit 3 facility.

“We must work carefully to ensure that the electronic component ecosystem is also developed in the future. This will not only create a major growth story for India but also align with our vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which inspires confidence and strengthens our position in the global electronics manufacturing sector,” the minister said.

This development is part of the PLI 2.0 initiative for IT Hardware and emphasizes India’s growing strength in manufacturing high value electronics.
