Today’s Live Results: Jaime Munguia Vs. Bruno Surace

Jaime Munguia looks to stay busy tonight against France’s Bruno Surace in a 10-round main event at 169 lb catchweight live on ESPN+ at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. The event begins at 9:00 pm ET on ESPN+.

Munguia vs Surace Live Updates

– Undefeated super bantamweight contender Alan Picasso (31-0-1, 16 KOs) knocked out his opponent Yehison Cuello (13-3-1, 11 KOs) in the third round of a scheduled ten-round fight. Picasso, 24, landed a nice left to the body in the third round that put Colombian Cuello down on the canvas. The referee then called it.

The 5’8″ Picasso’s skills were on another level, landing lefts to the body in excellent form from the first round and getting out of the way of Cuello’s hard blows. Cuello was loading everything.

When he connected sometimes, you could hear the sound of the impact. He was certainly strong. By the third round, Picasso was in full control of the fight, and it was a long time before he could get the knockout punch.

With this victory, Picasso remains in the fight against the undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue. He is one of the fighters fighting to defend Inoue’s title after his January 24 fight with Sam Goodman.

Munguia, 28, (44-1, 28 KOs) is trying to get a quick rematch with Canelo Alvarez after losing to him on May 4. Munguia has fought once since then, stopping his opponent Erik Bazinyan in the tenth round on September 20.

Today’s ESPN+ main card

– Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Sarace
– Alan Picasso vs. Yehison Cuello

Picasso (30-1, 16 KOs) is expected to be the next challenger to undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue if he wins tonight against Cuello (13-2-2, 11 KOs) in their 10-round fight.

Munguia has an easy fight tonight against Surace (25-0-2, 4 KOs). None of the four sanctioning bodies include Surace in the top 15. The reason for that is obvious: Surace’s opposition was poor.

It is not clear why Top Rank chose this opponent over Munguia instead of a top ranked opponent. If the idea is to make Munguia look good and make sure he doesn’t get hit by anyone to ruin his chances of a rematch with Canelo, matching him with fighters like Surace and Bazinyan makes sense.

Ideally, Munguia should show courage by taking on top contenders at 168 to speed up the process of getting a rematch with Canelo, but he’s in serious danger of doing so. Munguia did not look good in his last match against Bazinyan.

If Mnguia was ambitious and willing to take risks, he could fight these guys for a rematch with Alvarez:

– Osleys Iglesias
– Christian Mbili
– Diego Pacheco
– Caleb Plant

Munguia is not expected to fight any of those fighters. It’s a business. His next fight is likely to be against Edgar Berlanga who he said he is interested in fighting. Berlanga is on the same talent level as Bazinyan and is an easy mark for Munguia or any of the fighters on the roster.
