Tim Walz Rally Live on World of Warcraft Twitch Stream

The Kamala Harris campaign is live streaming Tim Walz’s meeting from Arizona and Azeroth tonight. Yes, Azeroth—the planet he’s from Military World.

It will be the first time Harris’ campaign will live stream a game on its Twitch account. The event, which will take place at 6:30 pm ET, will include a live feed of Walz’s speech from Arizona with Preheat, the creator of Twitch, playing the game and providing commentary. Preheat is expected to highlight their connection with the campaign and encourage viewers to do the voting process.

The Harris campaign launched its own Twitch account in August where it streamed the vice presidential acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Joining Twitch was part of the campaign’s strategy to reach new, apathetic voters, a campaign spokesperson said at the time.

“Our job as a campaign is to break through the historically man-made media landscape, take the VP and his vision of the future directly to the hardest-to-reach voters and those who will decide this election,” Seth Schuster, a Harris spokesman, told WIRED of the decision in August.

Before Wednesday’s meeting, Preheat was playing Military World and teaching viewers how to defeat one of the latest raid bosses from The War Within expansion. He has more than 50,000 followers on Twitch and the Harris campaign described him as a volunteer. When asked by WIRED to comment on why they would be live streaming the campaign, Preheat said they were volunteering for a number of reasons, and cited several of Harris’ campaign platforms.

The purpose of the Harris campaign in organizing the rally with Military World gameplay to increase Harris and Walz’s exposure to the audiences that make up the majority of Twitch users, a Harris spokesperson told WIRED. For the past few weeks, the campaign has been deliberately trying to reach young men by advertising during major sporting events and on gaming sites like IGN.

The Joe Biden and Donald Trump campaigns are launching Twitch accounts in 2020. Trump’s account was suspended following the January 6 attack on the Capital, but was reinstated this past summer. The Joe Biden campaign played with formats, and once broadcast a feed from the back of a train as it traveled to the campaign to relaxing music.
