Tim Allen Talks Possible Jonathan Taylor Thomas Shifting Gears Cameo
Tim Allen He revealed if there were any previous plans Home Improvement the costar Jonathan Taylor Thomas to appear in his new sitcom Changing Gears.
“Anything is possible,” Allen, 71, shared exclusively with the new magazine Us Weekly. “He just came back [to the last episode we filmed]. He seemed to say.”
Allen said he would love nothing more than to share the screen with Thomas, 43, and, adding, “He’s really my baby. I raised that child for eight years on Home Improvement. These are all my children and this worries me.”
Before leading the ABC cast Changing GearsAllen opened the star Home Improvement from 1991 to 1999 Thomas, Patricia Richardson, Taran Noah Smith, Zachery Ty Bryan, Richard Karn again Deb Dunning. Thomas left the series early to focus on school and eventually decided to step back from acting altogether.
Allen and Thomas finally reunited on screen in four episodes of Last Man Standing. Thomas also directed three episodes of the sitcom. While Thomas has been out of the public eye, Allen has continued to find success as America’s favorite father in his role as Mike Baxter on the sitcom. Last Man Standingthat started in 2011 went to 2021, and now Matt Parker has entered Changing Gears.
“[My former onscreen wife] Nancy Travis he once told me [something] after I called him on time Last Man Standing. I said, ‘You have talked to girls [who play our daughters] summer?’ And then he pauses and says, ‘Tim, these aren’t our daughters and I’m not actually your wife,'” he laughed. “He was really cool about it because sometimes when they had a problem on the show, I’d say, ‘How do you think they feel?’ And he would reply, ‘Tim, they’re players. We just learned [what is on the page but] he’s not that upset.’”
Opened Changing GearsAllen plays a widowed father dealing with an estranged daughter Kat Dennings. The two gushed about how “quickly” they formed a connection during their time on the show.
“The director wanted to see how we fit together. It didn’t stop. The kismet was crazy. We are both born on the same day – many years apart,” he said Us. “We are different in many ways. But our attitude towards comedy is very similar. You crack me up and it’s not that easy. Kat can [deliver these lines] with a straight face. Allen continued: “When we’re arguing on screen, it’s funny that we interrupt each other and it’s spontaneous. I don’t know where it comes from. I love this person already. She and her husband [Andrew W.K.] they are great people. It’s like I’ve known him for weird years, just like most of the cast.”
Dennings, 38, felt the same way about her relationship with Allen.
“It clicked quickly. We had lunch after accepting the role and I felt like I could trust him for some reason,” he shared in an exclusive interview with. Us. “And he opened up to me very quickly. so I [was] like, ‘Okay, this guy’s like taking me in.'”
Relying on the set allowed Dennings and Allen to hone their comedic skills. “It felt natural,” Dennings recalls. “And as [filming has] it’s advanced, our scenes are pretty funny, if I do say so myself. Arguments are my favorite scenes because I’m not afraid of anything. There is no fear for either of us. We just totally want it and it’s so much fun. “

While Allen enjoyed the performance Changing Gearsat first he wasn’t sure if he would return to sitcoms, he told Us“It was a difficult decision. I was doing Disney+ Santa Claus series at the time and I was like, ‘I can’t really think about this right now.’ Do I want to do linear TV? I was very depressed about how live streaming has hurt television. So if I did it, I want to raise it.”
Changing Gears airs on ABC on Wednesdays at 8 pm ET before airing the next day on Hulu.
