In addition to writing this engaging episode of Star Trek, Melinda M. Snodgrass was instrumental in making this episode Data-centric. Before writing the episode, he and the other writers debated which crew of the Enterprise would interact with the little alien girl.
Considering that most of the episode (with the exception of the B-episode featuring Wesley Crusher learning how to give orders to people older than him) focuses on the title pen relationship, the writer’s choice will determine who is featured the most in this particular episode.
