One of the topics I’ve written passionately about in the past is the unexpected joy you can get when you go back and re-watch a “bad” movie. For example, when I recently checked out an infamous remake of a horror classic, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Nana Visitor starred Pamela Voorhees in 2009. Friday the 13th. If you don’t know, he is best known for playing a Bajoran terrorist turned girlfriend in the series special. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
If you’ve already watched the movie and don’t remember seeing Nana’s Visitor in this very recent Friday the 13th movie, it’s because you have a brief cao look. The film tries to combine several pieces of Jason Voorhees’ history into one story, so that means we get a brief flashback at the beginning that recreates the original ending. Friday the 13th. So, our favorite Star Trek icon played Pamela Voorhees, the unsuspecting assassin of the original franchise who was decapitated by a would-be victim who happened to be our first final girl.
Another reason why it is easy to forget that Nana Visitor appeared Friday the 13th that the film follows his flashback sequence with an extended cold open. We’re introduced to a completely different set of young characters who love sex and weed, and they’re systematically killed off by Jason (who first rocked the updated look of his bag head from the first film). When we’re introduced to the original cast, it’s easy to forget that the movie started with a Star Trek legend playing a very scary role.
Sadly, we don’t get to see Nana’s guest flex her serious acting chops after the flashback sequence Friday the 13th. After all, chopping off his head as soon as the movie starts doesn’t leave him room to do much else. However, as a large part Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan, I wish this movie was a proper remake of the original, until Pamela Voorhees is revealed as the killer. Very few people can match the performance of the real Pam actress Betsy Palmer, but The Visitor is pretty good Deep Space Nine that I’m sure he could have carried the entire film.
If you just want to see more Nana Visitor in Friday the 13thyou are lucky (more or less). As in previous entries in the franchise, Jason keeps his severed head in a weird slasher sentimentality. The Star Trek character’s head starts off a little creepy, but over time it takes on a surprising narrative significance. It’s because the Final Girl of the film realizes that she looks like Pamela Voorhees and uses that to temporarily fool Jason in his quest to escape his chains.
If you wish to watch Nana Visitor’s memorable foray into horror, you can stream Friday the 13th (2009) in Max. Admittedly, the film isn’t for everyone, which is why it has a bleak 26 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But for those who want to see the Star Trek legend meld with horror fiction, this surprisingly good remake (suck it up, haters!) is more than worth the price of admission.
