The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Punta Nizuc will open in 2027

The Ritz-Carlton is returning to Cancun two years after leaving Mexico’s popular tourist destination.

Due to open in 2027, the new Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Punta Nizuc will be located 10 minutes from the airport in a high-rise building with 131 rooms and suites and 126 residences, all developed in partnership with FibraHotel, Fibra Danhos and Outside Ventures.

While details are currently scarce on what else the property will include, we do know that it will feature a beachfront pool, a spa, and six restaurants and bars.

“Marriott is excited to bring The Ritz-Carlton brand back to Cancun, as we continue to aim to meet the growing demand for luxury travel and world-class accommodations,” said Brian King, president of the Caribbean & Latin America at Marriott International, in a statement about the project.

The Ritz-Carlton’s presence in Cancun was first established in 1993 when the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun became the brand’s first hotel to open outside the U.S. In 2022, the aging hotel dropped the Ritz-Carlton flag. it was renamed the Kempinski Hotel. Cancun.

At the time, the aging hotel was facing stiff competition from newer luxury hotels in the region with fresh paint, updated amenities and better overall value. It also felt like the former Ritz-Carlton, Cancun did not live up to the Ritz-Carlton brand standards or match the modern luxury experience offered at new Ritz-Carlton properties around the world, such as The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad.

With the return of the Ritz-Carlton, Marriott continues to double down on its luxury offerings around Cancun. Next year, St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort is scheduled to open shortly north of Cancun in Costa Mujeres. To the south near Playa del Carmen, the Riveria Maya Edition in Kanai has a grand opening this year.

While the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Punta Nizuc will offer Marriott Bonvoy members a traditional resort experience, Marriott is also focusing on its all-inclusive resorts in greater Cancun. Later in October, Almare, an adults-only Luxury Collection resort, will open on Isla Mujeres, adding an upscale option to Marriott’s all-inclusive offering.
