The overcooked team has a new creepy-cute co-op game called Stage Fright
There are two good stories here. First, the indie studio behind the Overcooked series, Ghost Town Games, is working on a new title called Stage Frightand will support both online and co-op. Rad! Second, Stage Fright is published by No Man’s Heaven studio Hello Games, an initiative that marks Hello’s first campaign to publish projects of other studios. Double rad!
Stage Fright is built around co-op, and its mechanics bring Overcooked style chaos to a series of escape room environments in a spooky, Luigi’s Mansion type world. It doesn’t have a release date but is available to wishlist now on Steam.
Overcooked and its sequels have helped reinvigorate the co-op genre in recent years, offering busy restaurant gameplay that always feels more fun – and shout-out – with a friend. Overcooked supports co-op bed play as well Overcooked 2 introduced online co-op to the series. Stage Fright represents the culmination of everything Ghost Town has learned about co-op games from Overcooked, complete with local and online play.
“There is nothing else that has played like him Overcooked when it comes out again Stage Fright it has the same creativity, but in a really different way,” said Hello Games head of publishing Tim Woodley.
Ghost Town Games has a core team of just three people, founders Oli De-Vine and Phil Duncan and writer Gemma Langford. They have been improving Stage Fright under the code name Project Attic – because they’ve been building this game in their attic – and their website lists six other participants. There’s also Hello Games for everyone.
De-Vine and Duncan have been friends with the Hello Games team – including founders Sean Murray, Grant Duncan, Ryan Doyle and David Ream – for years. After Hello get success with Joe Danger in 2010, they helped connect Ghost Town with the publisher at the end of the OvercookedTeam 17. Overcooked it came out in 2016 and the rest is Culinary co-op history.
“Phil and Oli came to visit us for advice on the very first demo Overcooked about ten years ago,” Woodley said. “We have fond memories of the four founders of Hello playing that Overcooked demo, they were screaming about onions – it was clear right away that this was something special.”
Hello Games is currently in development Light There is no Fireis a cooperative survival and exploration game that takes place on a giant fantasy planet like Earth, offering a mix of role-playing and sandbox engineering. The studio is still heavily supporting and expanding its hit single, No Man’s Heaven (and things seem to be going very well). Stage Fright will be Hello’s first as a third-party publisher, but it doesn’t mean the studio is focusing on publishing full-time.
“Hello Games has a lot of experience that we can borrow from, support that we can give, but to be honest it’s really attractive to us that we enjoy working with a group of creative people that we just love to spend time with,” Woodley. said. “When we played the first version of Stage Fright we got the same buzz as we had Overcooked all those years ago. It’s just something we wanted to be involved in.”
