The leader of Germany’s populist BSW criticizes Putin’s war with Ukraine

Sahra Wagenknecht, the leader of the new German populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) has distanced herself from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I condemn this war,” Wagenknecht told German public broadcaster ZDF on Thursday. “I consider politicians who start wars – and that also applies to Vladimir Putin – as criminals.”

Wagenknecht is known for his opposition to German military support for Ukraine and has expressed pro-Russian sentiments in the past.

Speaking to ZDF, however, he defended the decision to leave the German parliament, the Bundestag, and his party ahead of a speech given by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in June.

He said there was no opportunity for debate at the time and that Zelensky would only receive “ovations,” despite having recently ordered drone strikes against Russia’s nuclear forces using drones. That was “very reckless,” Wagenknecht noted.

The BSW, which was founded last year on a platform that combines left-wing economic policy with hardline positions on issues such as immigration, will poll around 8%.
