The Big-Budget Sci-Fi Sequel on Netflix Improves on the Original Film in Every Way

Sci-fi as a film genre often feels like something from a different universe. After all, films with a lot of money behind them often end up being disappointing flops, and those made on a soft budget often end up as cinematic classics. As a result, we were excited to see that one of the biggest budget sci-fi movies ever made is now available for streaming. And if you’re ready to experience a sequel that builds on the original film in every way (or just wants to learn how to ride a giant worm), it’s time to stream Dune: Part Two on Netflix.

Courtesy of visionary director Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Two it’s one Netflix audiences probably appreciate because, if nothing else, it has more action and more complex world-building than the previous film. This sequel continues the story of Paul Atreides and his mother, who live among the native Fremen after his family is brutally murdered by House Harkonnen. Paul learns to be the prophesied savior the Fremen see him as, but it soon becomes clear that he may end up dooming rather than saving the galaxy as a whole.

If you are looking Dune: Part Two for the first time on Netflix, you’ll likely be impressed by the stacked cast, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as his Fremen love interest. Other returning stars include Rebecca Ferguson (who plays Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother), Josh Brolin (who plays Paul’s ruthless mentor), and Stellan Skarsgård (who plays Baron Vladimir Harkonnen to stunning perfection). Franchise newcomers include fan-favorite actors such as Austin Butler (who plays the baron’s ruthless nephew), Christopher Walken (who plays the Emperor), and Florence Pugh (the Emperor’s eldest daughter).

People Love Dune

Good before Dune: Part Two landed on Netflix, it managed to delight film lovers with its out-of-this-world quality. Thus, the ambitious sci-fi sequel earned $714.4 million against a budget of $190 million and left audiences wanting more. And it seems that Denis Villeneuve is ready to give it to them, as last year there were reports that the director and the production company Legendary Pictures had already started work. Dune Messiahthe film is intended to serve as the end of this cinematic trilogy (although Villeneuve said he is not “closing the door” on possibly adapting the later books from Frank Herbert’s long series of books).

You may have noticed that Dune: Part Two it’s being pushed a lot to Netflix users, and there’s a reason for that. Simply put, the film was loved by the critics as much as it was loved by the audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 92 percent critical rating, and a 95 percent audience score on Popcornmeter. That makes this a rare sci-fi epic that managed to be a critical and commercial success, one whose success led to a great (but not great) HBO TV show. Dune: Prophecy.

Given its huge box office returns and amazing critical reviews, I doubt I should give it to sci-fi aficionados that a lot of hard to sell streams Dune: Part Two on Netflix. I will say this, though: I was one of the few geeks in my circle of reading-minded friends who had never read the original Dune novel before going into this film, and I was amazed at how accessible the film was. the new ones. If you’re worried you won’t be able to keep up, the film masterfully combines world-building with plot and acting. Basically, every scene enriches your experience of this universe without feeling boring or annoying.
