Teofimo Lopez Seeks High Level Acquisition, Eyes Free Agency

Teofimo Lopez posted on X today, asking his promoters at Top Rank what “shopping” number so that he can opt out of the remaining period of his contract.

Why this sudden burst of energy in Lopez asking his promoters to buy a number? He was able to see free agent Devin Haney fight on BLK Prime on March 25th and potentially make good money. Teo might want to get into the game.

Teofimo’s Top Level Exit?

As a free agent, Lopez could be snapped up by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, or he could choose to follow Haney’s strategy to stay in that position.

WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo (21-1-1, 13 KOs) seems to believe that he will get big fights once he leaves Top Rank, but it is doubtful that will happen. Teo’s losses to George Kambosos Jr. and controversial victories over Jamaine Ortiz and Sandor Martin showed that he is a limited fighter.

How does Lopez not know his purchase number? His manager should be able to give him this information. Top Rank has done man-to-man work with Teofimo during his career. It’s not their fault that he’s looked pretty poor since his big career win over Vasily Lomachenko in 2020.

Teofimo is currently scheduled to fight former IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias on March 15 in a non-PPV event on ESPN. There is a good chance that Lopez will lose that fight, as he has looked terrible against Jamaine, Sandor, and Steve Claggett.
