By Boxing News - 12/23/2024 - Comment Subriel Matias and Teofimo Lopez are nearing an agreement for a March 15 fight for Teo's WBO 140-lb title on ESPN PPV. Former IBF light welterweight champion Matias (21-2, 21 KOs) will be looking to become a two-time 140-lb champion when he faces Lopez. Work Close Matchroom-promoted Matias has fought once since losing his IBF belt to Liam Paro on June 15, and is looking to unseat Lopez. "Teofimo Lopez and Subriel Matias have finalized an agreement for Lopez's WBO junior welterweight fight on March 15, sources told ESPN. The fight will headline an ESPN+ PPV. There is no place for this fight between the best players in the sport and the former champion," said Mike Coppinger on X. Teofimo has been looking for a big fight for the past four years, but his promoters have failed to give him anything compelling. Matias may be the best Lopez can hope for until something opens up for him. A loss to Matias will hurt Lopez, who has won his last five fights since losing to George Kambosos Jr. on November 27, 2021.
