Taylor Fritz made a statement on Sunday to kick off his campaign at the Nitto ATP Finals.
The American cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev to get off to a good start in his second appearance at the end of the season. Fritz took advantage of an error-filled opening set from Medvedev, where he hit seven unforced errors, before serving out the second.
“[The serve] it was definitely a big part of it,” said Fritz, who won 85 percent (33/39) of the first points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. “He is a person who knows how to come back. You can make a lot of first servers, but if they are not of the highest quality, they just put a lot of returns on the court.
“It was good for me, I hit many lines, many places to start games. I’ve been out of a lot of service games [with] no pressure. Some of the tough ones, I was able to do some tricks in long rallies or get free points for myself.”
After leveling the Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 1-1, Fritz moved to 1-0 in the Ilie Nastase Group. Others still waiting in the group stage are World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur, who is playing for the first time in the Nitto ATP Finals, are expected to clash on Saturday evening.
