Superman’s First Trailer in a New Era of Superhero Movies
You think you’re ready to watch James Gunn’s first trailer Supermanbut you may not be. Do you have good lighting? The right sound? A place where you won’t be embarrassed if you get a little nervous as shivers run up and down your spine? All of that can be helpful when you’re watching what to watch.
On July 11, the brand new DC Universe begins with the release of Superman. Written and directed by Gunn, it stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and many, many more. It’s a tone-deaf movie, so it should have come out of the gate with a popular, confident trailer. And it delivers. Check out the first trailer for James Gunn Superman.
There’s a lot to digest, and we’ll get to it all later, but first the public service announcement. Earlier this week, Gunn and several of his co-stars spoke to pressure from Warner Bros. and Gunn said what you just watched is as close to the movie as he could get without spoiling it. “I was incredibly tight with the trailer,” he said. “And it happened so many times that I was happy about it. And there was only one thing at the forefront of my mind [and] that was the trailer should be a true representation of what the movie is. It doesn’t have to have everything in the movie, obviously, but it should reflect what the basic theme of the movie and the story we’re telling is. And I think it does, but it took a lot of work to get there. “
That’s why you get love, you get action, you get heroes and villains, and you get to see Superman in great danger at the beginning of this trailer. (Gunn confirmed to io9 that the opening scene took place shortly after the opening scene of the film that he revealed earlier this week.) Again, in a very interesting turn of events. the trailer doesn’t say it’s for “Superman.” It says it belongs to “DC Studios,” a decision we asked Gunn about at the event. “It just feels good,” she said. “We had made these trailers and they did all this testing and I was like… I believe in testing. I believe in the vetting process and we have already vetted Superman. But it’s also like, you have to go with your gut and what feels right… [and it] it seems to have worked.”
We think so, but what about you? Supermanwritten and directed by James Gunn, hits theaters July 11—officially kicking off the new DC Universe. Tell us what you think of the trailer below.
