The Warriors have dipped below .500 for the first time this season, but the last thing Steph Curry wants to see is the team making any rash decisions.
Since starting 12-3, the Warriors have lost 17 of 24 games and have a troubling 19-20 record.
But, like Draymond Green and Steve Kerr, Curry doesn’t want the team to throw away its future to get winning pieces now before the trade deadline in February.
“A desperate trade or a desperate move that destroys the future, has a responsibility to allow or keep the franchise in a good place and a good place when it comes to where we leave this thing when we’re done,” Curry said, via ESPN. “It doesn’t mean you’re not trying to be better. It doesn’t mean you’re not active in any kind of search, if you have an opportunity where a trade makes sense or even in summer free agency. [move] make sense. He wants to keep getting better.
“No one wants to be old-fashioned or be in a situation where you throw away opportunities. But it doesn’t mean that you’re desperate and throwing things everywhere just because you want to do something.”
Green shared similar sentiments with Curry a few hours ago and it appears the four-time champions will accept a decline in their longevity — and a team that has a good balance when it folds.
“Mike understands that we want to win,” said Curry. “We want to be in that situation where we have always said that we want to be part of chasing the championship. While we understand that we’re growing and getting deeper into our careers and allowing some of the younger guys to blossom, it doesn’t mean you’re losing hope.”
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst responded with surprise to Curry’s comments.
“I’ve never heard a star interview like this in the middle of the season,” said Windy. “…Bron works, and has for decades, which is the exact opposite. He says ‘Trade the first round pick for 2031, I don’t care about that.'”
A longtime insider believes Steph would have spoken the same way to the front office and even went so far as to say the Warriors could use the trade deadline to save money and make a trade.
