Steph Curry Admits He Suffers From Performance Anxiety

Steph Curry, to the surprise of many, recently admitted that he still has performance concerns, even in his 16th NBA season.

The league’s all-time best three-point shooter confirmed that the pressure to perform at such a high level every night wears him down, but also holds him accountable.

“Oh, I’m definitely worried,” Curry said. “A lot is taken into account in the things I have set and the level I want to play at. Your expectations and knowing what a good game is. It’s a healthy insecurity to express yourself every night, which is great. It keeps you going.”

Like many, ESPN’s Tim Keown was surprised to hear this.

“He plays with such freedom, bulliness and unreliability that it’s surprising, as it did to me, to learn that Curry has a performance problem, that he approaches every game with a constant fear of what’s to come,” ESPN’s Tim said. Keown said. “He doesn’t seem to be bothered by the things that are there as he has collected 17 points in the fourth quarter in the defeat [Los Angeles] Lakers on Christmas Day; looked equally untouchable hitting eight 3-pointers against France in the Olympic gold medal game; the same countless times he has thrown his conscience aside and led his team with an unthinking long shot.”

Unfortunately, Curry is facing a difficult situation this season, the Warriors are trying to use him sparingly but the team is struggling without him.

“I want to do this as long as possible,” Curry said. “But the clock is ticking. We all know that.”

These quotes from Curry are becoming more and more common. As we added, “It’s hard sometimes. It’s scary sometimes. I know that the days ahead are much shorter than before.”

As a junior guard, all the competition against bigger opponents and the postseason run is starting to take its toll, he said.

“The scales have changed, for sure,” Curry said. “It’s a measured way now. I feel like I can still reach the same heights, but is that an overnight thing? Maybe not, but picking and choosing your spots and trying to manage an 82-game schedule and hopefully get to a playoff series when you’re fresh out.”
