Spotify’s AI playlists are now available in the US

Spotify is doubling down on artificial intelligence. First, the music streaming service is launching its AI DJ in 2023, and today, September 24, it’s bringing AI Playlists to Premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

The feature generates custom playlists based on niche information. It became available to Premium users in the UK and Australia back in April 2024. The tool is still in beta and allows subscribers to choose from a notification or write their own. For example, if you’re looking for the perfect playlist to clean up on a Sunday morning, in theory, Spotify’s AI should be able to generate one that matches your preferences.

In a blog post the music streaming giant recommends subscribers stick to a “genre,” “mood” or “artist” that helps produce the most successful playlists, but states that anything from movie characters to emojis can be used. Examples include, “Up beat folk music for the perfect fall tour,” and “2000 era hype for the tailgate.”

While some users may prefer not to need to maintain their playlists, since Spotify relies heavily on AI, users are often misled by their unique tastes. Instead of choosing happy folk music that brings back memories of fall or songs that a trusted friend played you, the AI playlist tool encourages you to take ownership of your listening, turning AI into a tastemaker.

Previously, if you opted out of creating your own playlist, you could search the platform for subsequent playlists created by another human user. Now, Spotify wants an algorithm to do it for you. Although you can still choose to create your own playlists or listen to other user-generated playlists, when the “personalization” features are implemented by Spotify, the behavior becomes less.

To try out AI Playlists navigate to “Your Library” in the lower right corner of your screen. Then, select the “+” in the upper right corner and press “AI Playlist.” That should open the chat tool, and from there, type in your playlist command.
