Sister Wives Recap: Christine Says Robyn ‘Planted’ Meri’s Divorce With Kody

Meri legally married Kody, 55, in 1990, becoming his first wife. The family expanded their children in 1993 when Kody got married spiritually Janelle Brown. In 1994, Christine entered into spiritual union with the Patriarch.
When Robyn started dating Kody in 2010, she already had three children from a previous marriage. After four years, Meri and Kody divorced legally and he married Robyn and adopted her children.
Although Christine suspected that was Robyn’s plan all along, she denied the charges. “The idea that, like, I planted an idea in Meri’s head is a blatant lie,” Robyn said on Sunday’s episode. “I never said.”
He said, “I don’t know a single person who divorced his first wife so that the second wife could have children.” I’ve never heard that before.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Robyn said, “I feel like I’ve been gassed by other family members,” implying that her actions were misunderstood.
Janelle, on the other hand, admitted that she was wary of Meri divorcing Kody in 2014 because of the dynamics of their family at the time.
“Actually, I was speechless [Meri] he told us that he was really doing it, because I thought that Meri would not do this,” Janelle recalled. “I had started to see that there was a little bit of Robyn’s preference for Kody at that point, and I was concerned.
However, Robyn insisted that it was not her intention to legally marry Kody, especially after her previous divorce. He said it was Meri’s idea, and Meri said she was the one who started the trial but she and Kody discussed it together.
“[Meri] he had this idea in his head that he was going to give me a legal marriage so Kody could take my kids,” Robyn told viewers, adding, “I never even wanted to be legally married to Kody.”
Robyn alleged that she is “very grateful” that she “couldn’t be legally married” to Kody because she had gone through “a lot of trauma with my legal divorce from my last marriage.”
He added, “I was very happy and satisfied with my spiritual marriage. I didn’t need anything else.”
Although Meri took steps to get the ball rolling after her 2014 divorce, she didn’t think it would have such a big impact on her emotional state or her marriage to Kody.

“I wonder if at that time he already had this plan in mind, [saying]’If I can just do this, it will be easy to change,'” Meri told the cameras, saying that within “six months” of signing the papers, Kody “stopped coming here.”
She remembers that she was “very bitter” when she went to the lawyers to sign the papers, because she did not feel “emotionally supported” by the other wives or Kody.
“I had the rational part of me saying, ‘No, you still have the spiritual side of marriage.’ I felt like I was breaking up with the whole marriage,” explained Meri. “It was difficult. And I had to tell myself all the time, ‘No, it’s not. We still have that spiritual marriage.’”
Kody admitted that he didn’t think the termination of the legal relationship was a big deal. “In my mind, we were just messing around with legal documents,” he said. “Meri and I, after that divorce, left Robyn and went to dinner together. I gave him a special ring and maybe we went home and made love.”

Meri and Kody remained spiritually united for almost 10 more years, but their relationship never recovered after their legal separation. (Meri confirmed her split from Kody in January 2023 after months of speculation. Christine and Janelle, meanwhile, left Kody in 2021 and 2022, respectively.)
Looking back, Meri said that their divorce and her decision to buy a bed and breakfast in Utah (where her mother lived until she died) was a way for Kody to distance himself from their marriage.
“I think it’s interesting that I’m actually here living in the house because when I bought the house, that wasn’t the intention,” said Meri in the episode after moving from Arizona to Utah permanently. “I know Kody felt that way. I think other family members did that too.”
He denied that “it was his escape plan,” asserting, “I think the escape plan was that of a legal divorce.” Let’s be honest, that was his escape plan.”
