Shapiro calls Musk’s pro-Trump plea ‘serious’

Elon Musk’s promise Saturday that his pro-Trump America PAC will award $1 million every day to a petition signer until Election Day is under legal scrutiny by Gov. Josh Shapiro, of Pennsylvania, called the offer “very disturbing.”

Shapiro made the comments Sunday morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” a day after Musk appeared at a pro-Trump rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Asked if he thought the offer was legal, Shapiro, the former attorney general, said the real question was “how [Musk] he’s spending money on this race, how dark money is flowing, not just into Pennsylvania, but apparently now into the pockets of Pennsylvania. ”

“That’s deeply concerning. Look, Musk obviously has a right to be able to express his views. He’s made it clear that he supports Donald Trump. I don’t know – obviously, we have a difference of opinion,” Shapiro said. “I’m not denying him that right. But when you start putting this kind of money into politics, I think it raises serious questions that people might want to look at.”

Shapiro did not say whether he thought the request was legal, but said it was “something law enforcement could look into” and “raises serious questions.”

Musk’s petition announced in Harrisburg on Saturday read: “The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I pledge my support for the First and Second Amendments.”

The first million-dollar prize was awarded to John Dreher, a self-described “huge fan” of Musk.
