Scholz labels Putin ‘frustrating’ but does it again

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he is willing to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin even though his recent phone call was unsuccessful.

“It was frustrating,” Scholz told the television station’s year-end review program on Wednesday, “because he just repeated all his formulas again.”

Despite criticism from Ukraine and Eastern European countries about the phone call, Scholz said it is necessary to make Putin understand that he will not rely on Germany to reduce its support for Ukraine.

Scholz said he urged Putin to “withdraw the troops so that the basis for peaceful development can emerge.”

Regarding the call, the chancellor said: “And that should be done, and I will do it again. But we must not be under any illusions about it.”

Scholz, in his own effort, called Putin in mid-November, for the first time since December 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Scholz of opening a “Pandora’s box” with the phone call.
