Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Choice Between Angel and Spike Surprises Buffy Fans

Opened Buffy the Vampire SlayerThe titular character faced many difficult decisions over the years, but perhaps the most difficult was choosing whose heart belonged to him: Angel, a haunted vampire with a soul, or Spike, a bad boy vamp who reluctantly joined the Scooby Gang and finally found his soul .
Debates about which is the right choice are still raging throughout the community, as fans ‘ship from Bangel (Buffy/Angel) or Spuffy (Spike/Buffy). Although fans may not get a straight answer, Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar did. In an old Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, you chose Angel instead of Spike.
Buffy, Angel, and Spike
If you have never watched a Buffy episode or you’ve just caught the occasional rerun, you might need a primer on how Angel and Spike became Gellar’s character’s romantic prospects in the first place. In short, Angel was his love interest from the first season, and the show unashamedly ripped off the depth of the romantic comedy with a fantasy starring a vampire and a vampire Slayer falling in love. Meanwhile, Spike was introduced as an adversary and former ally of Angel in Season 2, and began developing feelings for Buffy in Season 5, two seasons after Angel left Sunnydale to make her own.
Buffy didn’t see much of Angel (besides the occasional cameos) after her spinoff started, and that turn was how Spike became the main character. The resident girl Cordelia had also left Buffy and joined Angel as another familiar face in Los Angeles, the arrangement of Angel. Because of this, show creator Joss Whedon brought in Marsters as a regular BuffySeason four fills the antagonistic role that Cordelia once did, though the vicious vamp eventually developed feelings for Buffy that culminated in a destructive relationship (literally and figuratively) in Season 6.
The irony is, BuffyThe final episode did nothing to quell speculation about whether Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character should end up with Angel or Spike. Earlier in the episode, she had a deep conversation with Angel about her future, confirming that Spike is not “boyfriend” but that he is “in my heart.” He admits that he’s not ready for a relationship yet and didn’t think it was that far off, but reveals that he and Angel could still have a future together.
This scene might make you think that Buffy will ultimately choose Angel over Spike, but things get complicated when Spike sacrifices himself to save the world. Just before she dies, Buffy tells Spike “I love you,” to which he replies “no you don’t, but thanks for saying it.” There you have it, folks: same Buffy episode, our Slayer revealed a romantic future with Angel again she promised that she loved Spike, leaving fans wondering who she should have ended up with.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Chooses an Angel
However, Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar thinks Angel is the only logical choice over Spike. In his Reddit AMA, one fan asked “Spike or Angel” and explained in all caps “ANGEL.” Later, another Redditor asked the same question and confirmed his answer: “he’s still an angel.”
Hearing that the woman who brought Buffy Summers to life chooses Angel over Spike might be enough to end the endless fan fight over the issue. However, it is likely that many fans will continue to choose their battle lines based on which actor played the best while the other has the best hair. That last one is unfair, though…as all Spuffy fans know, Captain Peroxide can do better, and we’ll always bet on this little polar bear to win Buffy’s heart over Boreanaz’s boreanaz’s borsucker.
