Ryan Garcia Confirms He May Fight Isaac Cruz in New York
Ryan Garcia confirmed on Friday that he will be fighting Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in May in Times Square in New York. Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez will also be on the card.
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) said that Cruz (26-3-1, 18 KOs) is an opponent he has wanted to fight for a long time but never got the chance until now. Cruz was brought in to prepare Ryan for a rematch against Devin Haney in October in Riyadh.
The Big Apple Bout
Cruz is a former WBA light welterweight champion. He lost the title in his last fight to Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela via a 12-round split decision on August 3.
“Yes, in May. We will be fighting there. It will be good. Another great battle. I’m ready to do it,” Ryan Garcia told KO Artist Sports about his fight against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in May in New York. “Pitbull is still a top player. You may have lost once [correction: 3 times]but the fans love him. You are a big f*.
“There were a lot of people in London, and they were all meeting Turki. It’s nuts. Times Square, yes,” Ryan said about where he plans to fight in May. “Pitbull and I would fight many times. It never went down.
“I think it’s a fight that the fans have wanted for a long time until it’s him [Pitbull Cruz] is lost [to Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela on August 3rd]. I don’t think it should make a difference. He is still an explosive fighter. Rayo punched hard, so you won’t take anything away from him,” said Garcia.
For the record, Pitbull Cruz has lost three times as a professional to these fighters:
– Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela
– Gervonta Davis
– Luis Montana Alvarez
It doesn’t matter that Cruz lost to Rayo last August because casual boxing fans won’t know, and die-hard fans won’t care. They just want to see Ryan Garcia in action against anyone. For many fans, Ryan can fight with a cardboard support, and they would be happy.
“We have to find a replacement if he doesn’t win, but I’m sure he’ll be successful,” Ryan said of Isaac Cruz’s fight against Angel Fierro on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “If I win, I will fight him [Devin Haney] again, he hit him again. Then, I can finally relax and continue my work. Maybe he fought with Teofimo. That’s how it will happen.”
There is a good chance that Pitbull Cruz will lose to Angel Fierro next month on the David Benavidez vs. David Morrell. Fierro is a big puncher, and holds Cruz in a loss to Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela.
If Curz is beaten, Ryan’s team will have to act quickly to find someone in a hurry to fight for May’s card. One good thing Garcia has going for him is Turki Al-Sheikh. He’ll probably give a top fighter a chance to fight Ryan, and they’ll jump at it.
