Robert F. Kennedy Sr.’s Widow, Ethel, Hospitalized After Stroke

Robert F. Kennedy Sr.widow, Ethel KennedyHe was hospitalized last week after suffering a stroke.

According to his daughter Kerry Kennedywho shared the news on X on Tuesday, October 8, Ethel, 96, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, October 3, after suffering a stroke, “in her sleep,” that morning.

Kerry’s post began, “I wanted to let you know about my amazing mom,” before going into detail about how Ethel’s life had played out last summer.

“Had a great summer and transitioned into the fall,” the post continued. “Every day he enjoyed spending time with his children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was able to get out on the water, visit the fishing grounds, and enjoy many lunches and dinners with the family. It was a gift to all of us and to him as well.”

Kerry, 65, added that Ethel, the matriarch of the family and mother Robert F. Kennedy Jr.he is still in the hospital this week after “receiving treatment.”

The lawyer and human rights activist also explained, “He’s free, he’s getting the best care, and he’s surrounded by family. As you may know, she is a strong woman who has lived a remarkably fulfilling life. We are here to look after him.”

Kerry ends her performance by wishing her mother well. “Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” Kerry wrote. “Please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Other members of the Kennedy family, including many of Ethel’s 11 children Rory Kennedyand a grandson Joe Kennedy IIIson of Joseph P. Kennedy IIthey shared only slightly different announcements about the news through their social media channels.

Ethel is the oldest member of the Kennedy family and shares her children with Robert, an American lawyer who was assassinated while running for president in June 1968.

Ethel works as a human rights activist herself and founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights the same year her husband was assassinated. The non-profit charity is led by Kerry, who serves as the organization’s president.

In 1981, former President Ronald Reagan awarded Ethel the Robert F. Kennedy Medal at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. It was one of the many awards that Ethel has received over the years, including the Presidential Freedom Medal she received in 2014.

And that year, a bridge in Washington, DC was renamed the Ethel Kennedy Bridge to honor Ethel’s tireless work advocating for environmental and social causes.
