Brother of the late fitness icon Lenny Simmons spoke during his celebration of life, which was held in St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans on Saturday, October 5. In his speech, Lenny shared a “little secret” with the crowd: Richard was buried in a tank top and shorts, look. he had played most of his career.
“Like Clark Kent under his fancy clothes, his clothes, [Richard] he is wearing a tank top and shorts,” said Lenny on Saturday. “Why are you asking? Because we think that God has another plan for him, and we want to make sure that he would put on his normal clothes that we all know and love to help the saints and angels to get in shape.”
Lenny continued, “So I’m here to tell you that even though he’s not here and I know he’s in spirit here tonight, Richard Simmons will always be sweating it out with the Saints.”
Simmons died on July 13 at his home in Los Angeles, one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. It was confirmed in August that the cause of his death was “accidental due to complications from a recent fall and a heart attack as the cause,” according to a family spokesperson. Tom Estey in a statement at the time.

“The toxicology report was negative except for the drugs given to Richard,” Estey said in August. “The family wishes to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support at this time of great loss. … The world has truly lost an angel.”
The celebration of Richard’s life came amid his family’s battle over his inheritance and his housekeeper Teresa Reveles. In September, Reveles filed a motion to suppress Lenny and his wife, Cathyto relinquish his role as administrator of Richard’s estate. He wanted to be reinstated as a trustee and also sought legal action to prevent Lenny from using his brother’s status and image for personal gain.
“Richard’s message was always one of joy and peace. He would be upset if he heard about Teresa’s selfishness and was insulted that she would reduce their friendship which is said to be visible to the public,” Richard’s family said in a statement in response to Reveles’ request at the time. “His actions threaten to damage Richard’s wonderful legacy, which we are working hard to preserve.”
Simmons was best known for his weight loss programs and a line of aerobics videos Sweatin’ to the Oldies. On Friday, July 12, one day before his death, he shared a post on Facebook thanking fans for their birthday messages.
