Protecting Investments: The Strategy Behind the Career of Gervonta Davis
Stephen A. Smith is worried about Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis choosing to defend his WBA lightweight title against super featherweight Lamont Roach in their next fight on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Commentator Stephen A believes that Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) should fight guys at 135 or 140 rather than picking a smaller, weaker fighter like Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs).
Protecting The Investment
Fans have the same argument, but that doesn’t stop Tank from making this move. There are enough people willing to buy his events on PPV to continue doing these types of matches.
Tank Davis who was promoted by Mayweather was delivered with a low yield method taking certain battles, looking good against excessive opposition, and finally making good money but not always big dough. To his superiors, he is like an oil well, stored pumping oil slowly so that you don’t dry out.
“I think Roach is too young, and that’s my problem. I don’t doubt his ability or anything like that,” said Stephen A. Smith speaking to Sean Zittel, talking about his opinion on Gervonta Davis defending his WBA lightweight title against 130-pounder Lamont Roach on March 1.
“It was like Frank Martin. This guy goes in there, and he has 18 fights. I remember watching their pre-fight press conference, and he was really annoying Gervonta Davis. I knew Gervonta was going to get him, and that’s what he did. He went straight to him from round one.
“I remember what he said, and it really touched me. Gervonta is an excellent host. He said, ‘Sure, you really should have waited. You don’t have enough experience. You really should have waited and taken your time before you came to me,’ and that’s what Gervonta Davis told him. He was right. He was absolutely right,” said Stephen A.
Smith has to understand that Frank Martin is 29 years old, he wrestled Artem Harutyunyan in his previous fight before the Tank fight, and he couldn’t turn down a big payday against him. If Martin has big problems against Artem like him, he is not willing to wait three to five years to gain enough experience to fight Gervonta. By then, the Baltimore native would have been retired for a long time, and Martin has hit a lot of times because he’s not that good.
“So, now here we are, fighting this guy Roach, and I’m like, ‘Isn’t this guy a junior lightweight [correction: super featherweight] moving up to lightweight?’ No, there isn’t [chance for him]. That bothers me, and the reason it bothers me is because Gervonta is too big and too skilled to fight smaller guys.
“Gervonta can beat welterweights. He can probably knock out a few middleweights, right? Why are you fighting the little guy? “The only time I let the big guys fight the little guys is when you’re not known for your strength,” said Smith.
Tank can’t knock out middleweights unless he’s the lower fighters, and he doesn’t stop any of the top welterweights.
If Stephen is talking about a paper champion at 147, like Mario Barrios. Yes, Tank has already proven that he can stop that guy, but he hasn’t been beaten by anyone since he moved up to 147, other than the bloated, rusty Yordenis Ugas.[pletedring-rustyYordenisUgas[pletedring-rustyYordenisUgas
“You’re basically using your best skills and showing against a smaller, faster guy that skills don’t stop. But when you’re a big person and you’re obviously a powerful person, that leaves someone in a different situation, and I think that’s wrong.
“So, that’s how I look at it, and that’s what worries me about this guy fighting Gervonta. There is Teofimo Lopez who is 140 years old. Fight that brother. Fight someone your age or bigger,” said Smith.
The Business of Boxing
This is an example of Smith revealing that he just casual fan with basic knowledge of sports. His forte is apparently basketball and football rather than boxing.
It seems obvious that Stephen A. doesn’t realize how Tank Davis’ career is organized by his promoters and managers. It wasn’t that he couldn’t fight guys his size or size, but rather, there was too much danger. It was easy to fight dangerous battles.
Mayweather’s once-promoted Gervonta has moved carefully since the beginning of his career, and nothing has changed. He’s never had a 50-50 fight, and he sure hasn’t started now that he’s reportedly down to three fights before he retires.
