When the Star Wars prequels came out, fans were excited to learn more about the various characters and events that made up their favorite galaxy far, far away. Unfortunately, the controversial Prequel Trilogy introduced some big holes, including the fact that Leia would never have the memories of her mother (Padme died after giving birth to her twins) as she claimed. Return of the Jedi. This apparent Princess Leia hole has haunted fans for nearly two decades, but another fan theory explains exactly what happened: possibly, Leia unknowingly obtained images of her mother using the Force.
Leia Misses Her Mother
When Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, fans had no reason to doubt Leia’s account of her mother. She told her secret sibling Luke Skywalker that she remembers her mother as “very beautiful” and “kind, but… But Princess Leia was suddenly in the middle of a building where Sithi’s Revenge it came out in 2005 and we saw that Padme died (apparently of a broken heart) shortly after giving birth to Luke and Leia. This led to a natural question: how the heck is Leia going to remember what her mother looked like if she never saw her or really knew her?
From a fan perspective on Princess Leia, this isn’t really a plot hole. Instead, Leia was telling the truth about the only idea she had. Growing up and when he started his conversation with Luke, he had no way of knowing that he was Force-sensitive (actually, this conversation is where he found out). But she managed to reach the Force all her life, and considering how often this mysterious force field sends visions to future Jedi, it is completely reasonable to think that Leia received visions of the Force from her mother (either earlier or later in life) and believed. they were real memories of Padme.
The fan theory makes perfect sense
Interestingly, the fan theory that solves this Princess Leia hole makes even more sense when you revisit her conversation with Luke Return of the Jedi. When Luke asks what she remembers about her mother, Leia begins by telling him, “…images, really…feelings” before giving the aforementioned description of the body. Given the situation, it seems that Leia may have already squared the circle, unknowingly implying that what she had found was a vision (because, let’s face it, “images” and “feelings” are strange and ambiguous ways of describing fond childhood memories).
For fans who are still angry about the Prequel Trilogy, the resolution of this Princess Leia plot hole can provide some peace. Instead of a storytelling flaw, this idea provides a solution that ties in well with the Original Trilogy. Unfortunately, this theory can’t fix the many other problems with the prequels that range from bad dialogue (who can forget that sand talk?) and obnoxious new characters (“meesa Jar-Jar Binks!”) to the strange decision to have Padme. die of a broken heart. That plot point alone almost ruins it Sithi’s revengeundoubtedly the best of the prequels.
After all, we all know that broken hearts cannot kill. If they had known, the heartbreakingly painful Star Wars prequels would have been like the Thanos photo that caused half of the fandom to suddenly cry out in horror before being abruptly silenced.
