As Jannik Sinner claimed his seventh title of the season against Novak Djokovic at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, there were familiar faces in the stands.

Roger Federer, a two-time Shanghai title winner (2014 & 2017), was among those in attendance to witness the World No. 1 delays Djokovic’s bid to join the Swiss giants in surpassing 100 tour-level titles.

“I’m happy to see Roger, I don’t usually see him on the courts,” said Djokovic, who lost 7-6(4), 6-3 to Sinner in the tournament match. “I wish you were here on the field playing with us, but maybe I’m playing in front of you for the first time, so I added pressure today.”

Sinner has continued to run on hard courts this season, going 8-2 against top-5 players on the surface in more appearances than four-time champion Djokovic’s record. The 23-year-old’s only two defeats were in Indian Wells and Beijing against fierce rival Carlos Alcaraz.
