OpenAI is reportedly developing new strategies to deal with the slow pace of AI development

OpenAI’s next flagship model may not represent as big a leap forward as its predecessors, according to a new report in The Information.

Staff who tested the new model, code-named Orion, reportedly found that while its performance outperformed existing OpenAI models, there was less improvement than they had seen in the jump from GPT-3 to GPT-4.

In other words, the rate of development seems to be decreasing. In fact, Orion might not they are reliably better than previous models in other areas, such as coding.

In response, OpenAI created a task force to figure out how the company can continue to improve its models in the face of a dwindling supply of new training data. These new techniques reportedly include training Orion on artificial data generated by AI models, and improving multiple models during the post-training process.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In response to earlier reports about plans for its flagship model, the company said, “We have no plans to release a model called Orion this year.”
