Oklahoma schools chief charges Kamala Harris $474M in education costs, citing illegal immigration

Oklahoma’s top education official sent a “demand letter” to Vice President Kamala Harris that served as an invoice for what the illegal immigration crisis under her administration has cost Sooner State schools.

“As the state elected Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Oklahoma and the Chief Executive Officer of the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE), it is my job to ensure that the resources allocated to our public schools are accounted for and spent at school. the most effective way possible to benefit the education of Oklahoma students,” Ryan Walters wrote to Harris.

In August, Walters tasked the department with working with school districts to calculate the financial impact of taxpayers’ fees for illegal immigrant children. That analysis led to an estimate of $474.9 million, which Harris sought in the book.

“This amount sought is, of necessity, an estimate because only your administration knows the true number of illegal immigrants crossing this nation’s borders and the true cost of illegal immigration,” he said, asking Harris to do a more accurate accounting. costs incurred by Oklahoma schools.

“Under your leadership, the cost of education due to illegal immigration has increased astronomically. Your failure of leadership and efforts is the direct cause of the current problems Oklahoma and other states are facing now. Oklahoma taxpayers, schools, teachers and parents should not have to deal with the current problems. the responsibility of your failure they deserve better,” said Walters.

In an interview Tuesday, Walters said the border crisis is “crippling” Oklahoma schools, and that paying for these children’s education is “the biggest underfunded project in the country.”

He said Oklahoma was the first state to both count the education costs of the border crisis and to charge the Biden-Harris administration with funding disparities.

In August, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order directing hospitals to collect cost information in a similar manner, for patients “who are not legally present in the United States.”

“Since he has been a border king, he has failed our country,” said Walters. “Open borders have impacted all sectors of society, but they have overwhelmed our schools, destroyed our families. And it’s time for them to be held accountable for that.”

Walters said he is inviting other states to follow suit and calculate the real cost of immigration, to show the real effects of this crisis on the country.

Harris’ office did not respond to a request for comment.

When asked if he expects an answer or a remittance, Walters said the administration has been “not responding to the needs of all Americans for a long time.”
