The new film is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, someone Sarah Michelle Gellar considers her best friend. The two have a running joke that Buffy the actor “has an illegal job, which means I’m a continuation.” Given her previous experience with the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, Gellar is able to help the director by giving advice like “‘Well, that’s going to happen, or that’s not going to happen with those characters.’
For longtime fans of the franchise, it’s reassuring to know that Sarah Michelle Gellar is still involved in the iconic horror franchise, albeit in an unofficial advisory capacity. He and Freddie Prinze Jr. they are the only characters from the original I Know What You Did Last Summer returning in this fourth entry. Their involvement adds a welcome layer of continuity, otherwise the franchise might struggle to create a new identity (much like Scream tried to do without franchise lead Neve Campbell).
