Netflix saw highest cancellation date this year after co-founder donates $7M to Harris campaign: report

Netflix saw a dramatic increase in cancellations after its founder Reed Hastings revealed that he donated $7 million to the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a report.

Broadcast cancellations nearly tripled in the United States after Hastings made a major donation to a super PAC supporting Harris’ presidential bid, Bloomberg reported, citing researcher Antenna.

Supporters of former President Trump called on the first responders to cancel their subscriptions after Hastings endorsed Harris on X and revealed a large donation amount in July.

That same month, Netflix customers reportedly canceled their subscriptions at the highest rate in any month since February 2024, Bloomberg reported.

The company attributed the increase in cancellations to the company’s recent announcement that it would end the more expensive option.

“But a five-day period after Hastings’ approval was unusual, even for July,” the Bloomberg article said, noting that July 26 marks the worst single day of Netflix cancellations this year. News of Hastings’ big donation to Harris was revealed three days ago.

“Biden needs to step aside to allow a strong Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and successful,” Hastings wrote in an email obtained by The New York Times.

Hastings, along with his wife Patty Quillin, were prominent donors to the Democratic Party, especially in California. In 2021, Hastings donated nearly $3 million to a committee formed to stop the recall effort. Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif.

In 2022, Quillin was one of many successful candidates dedicated to the leftist group hoping to stop San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin from being reinstated.

In 2018, Hastings reportedly donated $7 million to a school-affiliated political committee that supported Antonio Villaraigosa, one of Newsom’s opponents, before Newsom advanced to the general election. Deadline report.

It’s unclear whether Harris’ endorsement affected Netflix beyond the five-day spike in cancellations. Their next financial report will be released in October, according to Bloomberg.
