CLaudia Sheinbaum will be sworn in as the first female President of Mexico on Tuesday. He will be the first Jewish person to hold this position.
The historic event will be held at the San Lázaro Palace in Mexico City and will see First Lady Jill Biden and the leaders of more than a dozen countries, mostly from the Caribbean and Latin America.

Shortly after his inauguration, Sheinbaum is expected to deliver a speech at the National Palace in Mexico City. He holds an executive role in Congress and significant control of state and military courts.
But Sheinbaum faces a host of challenges including an outbreak of organized violence, a faltering economy, and tensions with the United States, Mexico’s biggest trading partner, over a controversial legal overhaul that critics say would undermine democratic checks and balances.
Sheinbaum may have to work under the shadow of his predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as AMLO, who founded Morena’s left-wing party to which he belongs, and leaves office with an approval rating of more than 70%.
AMLO was first elected in 2018 and is constitutionally barred from serving a second term.
One of the first tests of whether the lifelong left-wing activist will follow in AMLO’s footsteps may come next month, when Sheinbaum presents the budget. The social and welfare policies of the outgoing President were popular but Mexico is facing a ballooning deficit.
Analysts also say he may move away from AMLO’s “hugs, not bullets” on organized crime, including reducing cooperation with US authorities.
“There are real-world reasons to believe that Claudia Sheinbaum will take a different, that is, a better, approach to social security than her predecessor, who had his charms – but not on this issue,” said Brian Winter, editor-in-chief of Americas. Quarterly, he wrote in a post on X.
Sheinbaum takes office one month before a tight US election in which Mexico and the migrant crisis at the border have taken center stage.
