Meta will invest in AI-generated characters and profiles to improve engagement

AI-generated profiles and users may soon flood Facebook, according to new comments from the manager of Meta AI.

Over the past year, the social media company has been active and promoting new artificial intelligence programs and technologies across sites like Facebook. In July, Meta launched a new pilot of AI character creation tools with hundreds of thousands of pre-created characters.

Although most of these characters are currently secret, Meta expects them to become a regular part of the platform within the next few years.

“We expect these AIs to exist, over time, on our platforms, in the same way as accounts,” Meta’s vice president of AI product Connor Hayes told the Financial Times on Thursday.

“They will have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share AI-powered content on the platform… that’s where we see all this,” he added.

Hayes said AI investment will be a “priority” for Meta over the next two years to help make its platforms “fun and engaging” for users. Currently, users can access Meta AI to edit photos or create AI assistants.

The Financial Times also reported that Meta is also planning to release new text-to-video production software for content creators to insert into AI-generated videos.

Before this release, some experts warned that critical rails should be installed to prevent the technology from “weaponizing.”

“Without strong safeguards, platforms run the risk of growing fake news with these AI-powered accounts,” chief marketing officer at talent agency Billion Dollar Boy and former head of Meta’s founding team Becky Owen told the Financial Times.

He also warned that the influx of AI users could actually reduce productivity by flooding the platform with relatively low-quality content.

He added, “Unlike human creators, these AI people don’t have lived experiences, emotions, or the same capacity for relatability.”

AI-generated content is currently required to be labeled “AI Info” on Facebook.

Commenting on Fox Business, a Meta spokesperson revealed the capabilities of the AI ​​tool.

“With AI Studio, people can create and interact with AI characters based on your interests. These can be created by anyone and used for help, entertainment or support. You can create and get AIs to help with things like teaching you how to cook, getting advice instant messages, generating captions, sharing fashion advice or giving daily affirmations,” the spokesperson said.

Although Meta has been investing heavily in AI, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in April that it may be a few years before they see any payoff from their AI technology.
