Megawide Corporate Foundation, Inc. supports DENR’s International Coastal Clean-Up

In its ongoing efforts to contribute to environmental sustainability, Megawide Corporate Foundation, Inc. (“MCFI” or the “Foundation”) – the corporate social responsibility arm of Megawide Construction Corporation (“Megawide”) – is participating in the International Coastal Clean-Up Drive. 2024 held at Dolomite Beach, Manila Bay, last September 21.

Led by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DENR), the annual event saw hundreds of volunteers from different groups focus on a common cause to address the ongoing challenges of marine pollution and environmental degradation. MCFI, along with more than 60 volunteers from different Megawide business units, participated in the initiative.

MCFI joined hands with local government units (LGUs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to remove trash and debris from Dolomite Beach in Manila Bay. The Foundation’s participation underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship, with the ultimate goal of improving the environment and biodiversity.

“The Foundation believes that a clean and healthy environment should go hand in hand with Megawide’s vision of a First-World Philippines,” said MCFI President Tata Saavedra. “Our participation in cleaning is not just picking up trash; it’s about raising awareness of the importance of our actions in preserving our coast for the benefit of future generations.”

The event provided an opportunity for MCFI volunteers to actively engage in environmental conservation, through proper waste collection, segregation, and disposal. During the day, the team was able to collect more than 30 bags, with an average of 50 kgs each, of plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other non-perishable items, on the beach – further emphasizing the need for continuous efforts to save the sea. According to the DENR, all materials collected will be disposed of and recycled, and will be used for studies. The results will be forwarded to the Ocean Conservancy to help strategize future waste reduction efforts.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

MCFI’s participation in the cleanup is part of its commitment to sustainable development. With programs focused on environmental protection, education and community involvement, the Foundation continues to work to align its projects with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13 “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.”

Dolomite Beach, which has undergone restoration efforts, serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural resources. By participating in events such as the International Coastal Clean-Up, MCFI plays an important role in the preservation of vital ecosystems, supporting a clean and green Philippines.

MCFI remains committed to its mission of promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging more people and organizations to join this global effort. The Foundation will continue to work with local communities and partners to develop programs that leave a positive and lasting impact on the environment.
