McDonald’s recently hit the headlines: what is the hourly wage for workers?

Like most fast food restaurants, what McDonald’s pays depends on a variety of factors, although some workers can make as much as $20 an hour.

Nationally, Ziprecruiter reported that the average hourly pay for McDonald’s Restaurant jobs nationwide is $13.27 an hour. However, fast food restaurants must comply with their state and local minimum wage laws, so wages will vary depending on where the employee works and things like their job title and experience.

Also, the salary may depend on whether someone works in company-owned locations versus its franchisees. More than 95% of McDonald’s restaurants are independently owned and operated by shareholders, who have the ability to set their own prices, according to the company. McDonald’s does not set salaries for its owners.

In 2021, the company increased wages especially for restaurants owned by McDonald’s by an average of 10 percent. Changed the entry level wage for workers to a minimum of $11 – $17 per hour, and the starting range for shift managers to a minimum of $15 – $20 per hour based on restaurant location.

Assuming a 40-hour work week and 52 weeks per year, $17 per hour translates to an annual salary of $35,360 per year. In comparison, a salary of $20 an hour can translate to just over $40,000.

The company also pledged that the average hourly wage for company-owned restaurants will rise to $15 an hour on a tiered, market-by-market basis by 2024.

However, last year, McDonald’s reported that shareholders in New York state had already raised their wages above the current $15 minimum to attract and retain workers.

By comparison, California’s law, which went into effect on April 1, raised the minimum wage for certain fast-food restaurants from $16 to $20, equivalent to an annual salary of $41,600.
