Jeff Mayweather says he felt Tyson Fury did enough to win a close decision against Oleksandr Usyk last Saturday night in their rematch in Riyadh. He thinks Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) outplayed unified heavyweight champion Usyk (23-0, 12 KOs) in a 12-round decision fight.
Jeff doesn’t think it was a fun fight, he calls it “Mediocre.” Usyk won a 12-round unanimous decision by scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 116-112. Fury gave up his chances of victory by not doing anything in the championship rounds while the fight was still to be held.
Weight and Performance
The weight that Fury was carrying made him slow, it was difficult for him to fight as hard as he needed to win. He would go into the first match at an impressive 262 lbs but made up for it by packing up to 281 lbs in the rematch.
Fury was so thin that he had to raise his trunk to reduce his stomach and leave less room for Usyk’s punches.
“The fight was very close. It could go either way, but I’m going to lean a little bit on Tyson,” said Jeff Mayweather on his YouTube channel, believing that Tyson Fury did enough to defeat joint heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk last Saturday.
“Every other round, he [Usyk] he can do good, but not like Tyson did. Usyk takes the reins of the heavyweight division. All were beaten by Usyk. So, maybe not,” said Jeff when asked if Fury and Anthony Joshua have a chance to become world champions again.
“I don’t think anyone wants to see a third fight [between Fury and Usyk]. The first fight for me was very good. The second battle was moderate. None of them do much. Basically, I think, both guys fought safe, and maybe that’s why Tyson didn’t get the fight. He fought very safely.
If Turki Alalashikh wants to set up a trilogy between Fury and Usyk, he can do it. Fans won’t want to see it. With Fury having lost twice, it is not a good time for Turki to compare him to Anthony Joshua. Fury needs a win or two against a tough opponent to redeem himself and boost his stock.
Turki should tell Fury that if he wants to get a payday against Joshua, he needs to get it by fighting Daniel Dubois and Martin Bakole. Let him go through the fire first to get that big payday.
Fury’s Guard Method
“He didn’t take enough risks. I do not think so. Everyone gets beat by the cruiserweight,” said Mayweather when asked if Joshua, Fury and Daniel Dubois could hang with Lennox Lewis, George Foreman and Mike Tyson.”
Fury seemed to fear injury in the rematch with Usyk last Saturday, and was not going to take chances. He didn’t want to be beaten. So, he played it safe, moved on, and got his $75 million payday without risking his skin.
It wouldn’t end well for Fury, Joshua, or Dubois to compete against Lewis, Foreman, or Mike Tyson. If there was a way to teleport them back to when those guys were young, it would be cool to see, but none of them would do well against those types of fighters. Fury would be the most vulnerable of the three because he can’t hit, and his moves or damage wouldn’t work.
“I don’t think so,” said Mayweather about whether Fury could be considered the best player. “Some people may think so. I really like Tyson Fury, and I think he’s extremely talented for a guy his size. But when you lose twice at cruiserweight, you can’t say much about that. I think you are [Fury] Hall of Fame.”
Fury is definitely NOT a Hall of Famer, and, of course, not an all-time hero. He has not beaten anyone except 40 year old Wladimir Klitschko, and Deontay Wilder. We saw how good he is with his recent losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. That loss took the spotlight off Fury’s victory over Deontay as he wrestled him.
