Martha Stewart says Ina Garten ‘stopped talking’ to her after Stewart was arrested
Martha Stewart and Ina Garten have different opinions on why their decades-long friendship ended.
The New Yorker published a profile on Garten earlier this month, and both sides explained why they stopped talking. According to Stewart, Garten cut ties with him after Stewart was sentenced to prison.
“When I was released from Alderson prison, he stopped talking to me,” explained Stewart. “I found that very depressing and extremely unfriendly.”

Although Stewart maintains his innocence, he was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction and two counts of lying to investigators in connection with his insider trading scandal in 2004. He received a five-month prison sentence, five months of house arrest and two years of supervised probation.

Garten denied Stewart’s recollection of the altercation between the two. Garten told The New Yorker that she and Stewart broke up after Stewart started spending time at her new place in Bedford, New York.
Meanwhile, Stewart’s spokesperson slammed the star’s original statement, saying he was “not bitter at all” after the altercation.
“When I was released from Alderson Prison, he stopped talking to me. I found it very depressing and extremely unfriendly.”
“There is no argument,” Susan Magrino told The New Yorker.
The history of the two goes back decades. Stewart first crossed paths with Garten after passing by her store, Barefoot Contessa, in East Hampton, New York, in the ’90s.

Garten previously recalled his first collaboration with Stewart.
“My desk was in front of a cheese case, and we just finished a conversation,” he told Time in 2017. “We actually ended up doing benefits together when it was at his house, and I was his caterer. And we became friends after that.”

Stewart went on to connect Gartner with an editor, which helped him release the cookbook “The Barefoot Contessa”. In 1999, Garten joined Stewart for an episode of “Martha Stewart Living.”

Garten went on to star on Food Network’s “Barefoot Contessa” cooking show from 2002 to 2021.
Garten and Stewart have faced rumors of a falling out. During his interview with Time in 2017, Garten continued to praise Stewart.
