Marriott recently opened a new hotel in Salt Lake City’s historic train depot

Historic train stations are cool – but even better when they’ve been turned into a stylish hotel where you can earn and use Marriott Bonvoy points, right?

That’s exactly what you’ll find in Salt Lake City at the now-open Asher Adams, the Autograph Collection hotel that was the city’s former Union Pacific Depot, built between 1908 and 1909. Now with 225 rooms, it is a French second empire style depot. reborn as a modern hotel, but retaining touches of its former life with restored features such as stained glass windows and terrazzo floors. Its name comes from John R. Asher and George H. Adams, two American railroad cartographers.

There are 13 suites in the restored building, all featuring exposed brick, picture frame moldings and bathrooms with soaking tubs and subway tiles. Some of the hotel’s modern rooms are in a brand new, eight-story tower; they are a subtle nod to the station and the history of Salt Lake City.

The original building has a place on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors will notice elements of its former life as a train depot throughout. You’ll see it especially in the stunning public spaces like the Grand Hall, as well as the four bars and restaurants – each inspired by the railway’s dining cars.

Rouser offers New American-style food served from the kitchen using charcoal grills, ovens and rotisserie as a reference to historic coal-fired engines. Number 119 offers whiskey drinks overlooking the Grand Hall and a vinyl lounge with over 2,500 records. The hotel’s main bar, the Bar at Asher Adams, sits in the center of the Grand Hall, and is “the heartbeat of the area,” according to the hotel. The counterpart, inspired by a railroad club car, is where guests can get their caffeine fix, pastries and snacks.

There is also a fitness center and meeting facilities on site. The hotel offers easy access to the highlights of the Salt Lake City area, such as the Delta Center – where you can catch Utah Jazz basketball games and concerts – and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and much more.
